Hey guys, It sure is nice to get back to winning form. It sure as
hell wasn't easy though. We struggled all weekend trying to find
some rear grip. I worked with
John from CTR Suspensions all day Saturday and Sunday to try and
salvage whatever grip can be found on the horrendous asphalt of this
track. The
Saturday I did the Heavyweight Solo. I was hoping that a new rear
tire might do the trick but it was only good for about 3 laps until
I would almost high-side myself at every turn. I brought it home in
6th place against some pretty serious names so I think it was a good
result.I just wasn't happy with my times. I wanted to drop 2 seconds
from what I did here the previous year (1:42.9).The best I was able
to do in the solo was a 1:42.96.
We put a new rear spring on the bike to that night only to have the
same problems in practice on Sunday morning. We did a few more
geometry changes and tweaks hoping that a new rear tire would bring
it to life.
First race was Heavyweight Twins Superbike. I started on pole and
led from start to finish. I won by over 20 seconds. The bike felt
good but I wasn't pushing hard
because I didn't want to crash out of the lead. I still
ended up doing a best time of 1:42.50 so that wasn't bad;
but not yet where I wanted to be.
Second race was Heavyweight Twins Superstock. Suzuki was
paying big contingency for this race so I had a few guys
that I needed to watch out for. I started this race on the
second row. I got a pretty good start but wasn't
leading going into Turn 1. After a couple of turns I went into the
lead but tried to put down some good laps.
Coming around on the first lap, my dad signaled to me
that I had a nice lead. When I came around in lap two, He signaled a
much smaller lead. I looked behind me to see who it was and it was
Russell Masecar. I now knew I had to really push. I thought for sure
I was going to crash trying to push harder because I still had very
poor grip coming out of the corners. I pushed hard and felt
that I was going a bit faster. My dad then start signaling that my
lead was growing. This made my day because I knew Russell was really
hungry to catch up to win some money and
1st place. I ended up taking First place.
I also managed to do a 1:41.60 so that was the icing on the cake for
me.
I'm always glad to leave this track in one piece. I really needed
the points in order to keep me in the championship hunt which I am
currently sitting in 2nd place. I closed
the gap on Pete Eschelman nicely.
Next race will be the WERA National at Summit Point.
I want to thank everyone who has helped us get this far
and not given up on us when things got a little tough over
the last 2 months...
